Leave a Legacy, Professor Scott Galloway

In April this year Professor Scott Galloway from NYU spent 720 seconds on the red circle of a TED talk dropping some very uncomfortable facts around why young people in the US are worse off than ever before. (you can catch it here, I highly recommend it)

It’s garnered over 6 million views and sent ‘Prof G’ onto the talk show rounds – and this clip in particular struck a cord. (watch it here) where he touches on the power of mentoring and the impact it has had on his own life.

Mentoring isn’t just about the here and now.

It’s not just about the impact you can make to someone in the moment, hours or days that you meet.

Mentoring is about legacy.

Here’s a Professor at NYU talking about the impact someone had in his life decades earlier – and yet it still moves him deeply.

More than that – that mentor has sent an echo decades into the future as their work with a young Galloway is now driving passionate and meaningful work into an entirely new generation.

As we move through our careers and lives we start to arrive at the question of legacy.

What of our work will matter when we are no longer doing it?

How can we take years, even decades of hard-earned experience and sometimes painful lessons learned and ensure that they are not only kept, but leveraged by others so that they may stand on what we have built?

Mentoring is a way to leave a legacy that stretches far beyond our own experience.

To take time to invest in the life of someone whom you owe nothing to is an act of selflessness and gratitude that may well impact generations.

And the cost can be as little as an hour per week.
