A universal parenting moment.

You’ve spent literal months telling your teenager the same thing over and over and over – to no avail. But lo and behold, Coach tells them the exact same thing on a random Saturday morning and it sticks like glue. You’re left standing on the sidelines, arms outstretched, screaming – “I’ve been telling him the same thing for weeks” like some frustrated b-grade life coach.

Good news – it’s not you, it’s them.

Sometimes they just need to hear it from someone who isn’t you.

It’s not a trust issue, or respect or rampant rebellion, sometimes they just need to hear it from a third party, someone who hasn’t been telling them what to do for over a decade and someone who is clearly infinitely wiser and cooler than you…because…reasons.

And if as a parent you’re nodding your head, remember, you were probably no better. I know I wasn’t. Even with a fantastic and quote/unquote ‘normal’ upbringing I still needed to hear what may have seemed like the bleeding obvious from outside mentors from time to time.

So If that was you as a kid then, or is you as an parent now, here’s a way to come full circle and feel really good in the process.

Our high school communities have scores of young kids in need of some local mentors – you don’t have to be a Birkenstock wearing philosopher, uber-successful business magnate or some Insta-famous life coach on Tiktok.

Most of the time you just need to be someone who hasn’t been telling them what to do for the last decade. They need someone to listen, be present and maybe share some stories of when they got it wrong and got it right and what helped them along the way.

In the end we all want the same outcome – as parents, mentors, community members – to help raise healthy, positive and capable future adults.

We’ve all spent time frustrated and yelling from the sidelines – but kids will be kids, just like you were - so here’s the chance to take the field, done the ‘coach’ jersey and play your part.

Standing Tall in Warrnambool is a school-based mentoring program helping students stay engaged, helping them navigate a complex time in a complex world.

We provide training and support - in a group environment match mentors and students for one hour a week – to listen, play uno, get some sun, talk about all manner of things, maybe have a bite to eat.

Sometimes all it takes is someone from outside their world to help them sort out some of the stuff happening on the inside.
